Wang Dongling graduated from the first postgraduate class in calligraphy at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now China Academy of Art) in 1981 with an MA and stayed on to teach. In 1989, he went to the United States to teach Chinese calligraphy at the University of Minnesota for four years and was a visiting professor there and at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
