Li Gang was born in 1986 in Dali, Yunnan Province, and now lives and works in Beijing.
Li Gang regards artistic creation as a means of building emotional and spiritual containers. He attempts to uncover the interplay between the language of everyday items and the language of art, enabling him to interpret and decode the underlying information and self-expression within things, then transforms this information into special objects that can store emotions and spirits. By way of this material intuition, Li Gang emphasizes the spirit and tension immanent in the very materiality of things, establishing a balance between content and form that allows him to explore the limits of artistic perception. His artistic practice, guided by the principle of “material spirit”, probes how art can evoke material consciousness within people’s emotional lives.
